Border Patrol agents intercepted a significant methamphetamine haul on Interstate 8 near the Buckman Springs exit. During a routine stop on Tuesday evening, they discovered four large duffle bags in a blue pickup truck, which contained approximately 188 pounds of meth with an estimated street value of $281,940 according to a release from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The presence of the drugs was first suspected by the agents and later confirmed by a K-9 unit. Subsequent testing verified the substance to indeed be meth. Chief Patrol Agent Patricia D. McGurk-Daniel stated, "Our agents will continue to work tirelessly to ensure our communities are safe and that these dangerous drugs stay off our streets." Her remark echoes the determination of the agency to combat the flow of illegal narcotics as detailed in the Border Protection's release.
The bust is part of Operation Apollo, a concerted effort by federal, state, and local law enforcement to target drug trafficking. To date, the operation has seized 1,800 pounds of meth, 2,100 pounds of cocaine, 111 pounds of heroin, and 1,285 pounds of fentanyl this fiscal year, indicating a robust response to drug smuggling activities.
As part of the ongoing efforts to safeguard borders and communities, the U.S. Border Patrol encourages the public to report suspicious activities by calling the San Diego Sector at (619) 498-9900.
