The San Diego Humane Society is currently dealing with record-high dog population levels, standing at 178% above capacity. This has been exacerbated by an outbreak of a severe canine respiratory disease known as Streptococcus zooepidemicus ("Strep Zoo"). The Society is now calling on the community for help in adopting or fostering these dogs.

As part of their strategy, the San Diego Humane Society is waiving adoption fees for dogs and puppies until December 1,to quickly find homes for the 425 adoptable dogs currently in their facilities and to make room for other incoming animals, as reported on Hoodline.

Renovations at the Adoption Building have necessitated a temporary relocation of animals, emphasizing the urgency to find homes for these dogs, as noted on the San Diego Humane Society's Facebook page. As an added incentive, the Society is to offer a $100 Visa gift card to those willing to foster mother dogs and their puppies for two weeks. They assure that it's safe to bring a dog being treated for Strep Zoo into a home with other pets.

While the San Diego Humane Society manages this mounting problem, it is essential that the community plays its part. Even temporary fostering can provide a safe space for these dogs and free up much-needed capacity, according to the San Diego Humane Society. Now more than ever, with over 700 dogs in their care and more arriving, the Society appeals to the community's compassion to assist these vulnerable animals in need.
