The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) and Police Officers Association are readying to inaugurate the country's first childcare center tailored to law enforcement officers' needs.
According to the City of San Diego news report, funded by local businesses and private donations, the center will cater primarily to SDPD officers, but it will also be open for other law enforcement agencies' personnel to utilize. With its convenient location near police headquarters, the center will be more practical for parents with their non-standard, often odd hours.
Its development has been hailed by community leaders as a significant step toward improving the health and well-being of law enforcement personnel. The center plans to provide developmentally appropriate care and preschool readiness programs for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old.
"The San Diego Police Department is proud to be leading the nation in efforts to create pathways for working parents to have quality childcare while pursuing a career in law enforcement," said San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit via Inside San Diego news. He further expressed that they hope to provide an example for other departments, demonstrating an effective way to support officers in their journey through parenthood.
Construction of the center is underway and is expected to be opened by January 2024.
