Tragedy struck a vacant lot in Linda Vista Monday morning when a 911 call led San Diego first responders to a gruesome discovery: a deceased man in his 30s was found in a tunnel-like cavity as city firefighters mounted a complicated rescue operation turned recovery mission. The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department was called to a scene near the intersection of Osler and Ulric streets after a person was alarmingly informed to report a body in a hole, although the reporter hadn't actually witnessed the cadaver, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.
Upon arrival, crews encountered the macabre task of retrieving a victim from within what was described as a "tunnel" on a mid-slope hill in a desolate lot, leading to an intensive operation as they devised a plan to recover the individual—unidentified at the time, in the midst of speculation, a home for one was concluded to be a silent tomb for another.
Somber confirmation came at 11:27 a.m. that the victim was pronounced dead, their mortal coil left in the care of authorities, marking an end to the frantic search and the beginning of another narrative—the handoff of responsibilities as the body was turned over to the SDPD.
Extended inquiries conducted by CBS 8 shed light on the stark realities of the deceased, an "apparently homeless man", CBS 8 obtained confirmation from SDFD on the heartbreaking identification. Details on the cause of the death remain unclear as the community awaits answers.
