Three Chicago men are indicted on federal racketeering charges over an alleged murder aimed to further their status within a gang. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois' press release, Cameron Callison, Victor Ramirez, and Juan Alcaraz, all in their early twenties, were charged with one count of murder in aid of racketeering. The authorities accused the three men of killing Victor Ochoa on June 17, 2019, to secure and elevate their roles within the Ambrose street gang.
The city of Chicago is no stranger to gang activity, with its South Side being home to the Ambrose gang, a group notorious for violence and drug trafficking.
Various community-based programs have been implemented in an effort to address the gang violence problem. The initiative aimed to propagate positive behavior amongst the youth and discourage them from entering into criminal activities and gangs.
The recent indictment of Callison, Alcaraz, and Ramirez aims to dismantle the root cause of this gang violence by specifically targeting key individuals responsible for its perpetuation. By prosecuting individuals aspiring or possessing leadership positions within gangs, officials aim to implode the organizational structures of these illicit groups.
The defendants were apprehended earlier today, with their first appearance in federal court scheduled for later the same day. On conviction, the trio face a potential mandatory life sentence or the death penalty, under the charge of murder in aid of racketeering. Callison, already a convicted felon, stands to risk an extra decade in prison due to his alleged illegal handgun possession.
