A leisurely hike turned tragic for a 70-year-old man from Keene when he suffered a lethal medical episode while scaling New Hampshire's famed Mount Monadnock. Kenneth Swymer Sr. was trekking up the Marlborough Trail on Tuesday when he suddenly collapsed, becoming unresponsive as the autumn chill bore witness to his final moments as reported by Boston 25 News.
The ill-fated hiker's companion swiftly dialed 911 at approximately 11:15 a.m. and proceeded to determinedly administer CPR in a valiant effort to fully save his friend's life. Their efforts, despite being fraught with the urgency of dwindling time, did not suffice to rekindle the spark of life within Swymer Sr., as the swirling winds of fate had other plans according to The Newport Dispatch.
An ensemble of first responders, including Conservation Officers, Police Officers from Troy and Jaffrey, firefighters from several neighboring towns, and medical personnel from the Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance Service, rushed to the scene alongside volunteers from the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team. They too joined in the orchestra of what ended in tragedy.
Yet, the question that clings to the mountain's rugged terrain is "why?". No clear answers have flowed from the lips of officials, as the cause of Swymer's medical emergency has not yet been divulged. The incident continues to be under investigation, with many hoping to seek closure on what transpired on that fateful trail, Boston 25 News echoes.
