Earlier today, a man tragically lost his life after driving his truck into the Connecticut River in Enfield. Police identified the man as suicidal, according to Patch.
Responding to reports of a suicidal individual, law enforcement arrived at the Donald Barnes Boat Launch on South River Street, as reported on Patch. They found a 63-year-old Plainville resident, apparently under the influence of alcohol. When police tried negotiating with him, he responded by driving his vehicle into the river, maintaining eye contact with officers as his truck submerged, as stated by the Hartford Courant.
Rescue services from Connecticut State Police and the Tolland County Dive Team were soon on the scene, but the mission shifted to a recovery effort, according to the Hartford Courant. Divers later found his body in the truck, which was located 50 feet from the shoreline and submerged at a depth to 15 feet. The search lasted several hours Patch reported.
Both Enfield and Plainville law enforcement agencies will continue the investigation into the incident.
