On November 15, a Cessna P210N Centurion N1400 plane tragically crashed in the La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego, resulting in the death of the pilot. The pilot had declared an emergency after missing his approach to KMYF, and informed air traffic control that he was out of fuel before subsequently losing all communications, according to Reddit.
The wreckage was located on a hillside near La Jolla Village Drive and Gilman Drive using a drone unit as per NBC San Diego. The plane had departed from Murietta, California. Flight tracker information indicated that an attempt was made to land at Montgomery Field in Kearny Mesa before heading northwest toward La Jolla. It was at this point the pilot radioed in, expressing his fuel shortage, before losing all communications.
Compounding fuel problems was severe weather conditions, including rain and fog, that significantly reduced visibility and presented an even greater flying risk. Despite these perilous circumstances, the pilot managed to land avoiding any extensive damage to neighboring houses.
The National Transportation Safety Board is in the process of investigating the crash, with the full report to be revealed in the coming weeks.
