Big Apple bamboozlers busted big-time in the Lone Star State. Four New Yorkers were collared in Plano, Texas, after allegedly pulling off a high-dollar fraudulent shopping spree at Willow Bend Mall. The quartet was trapped with a trove of ill-gotten goodies, fake IDs, and loads of cash.
Hailing from the hustle and bustle of New York, the four suspects—Heping Cheng, Zhaohui Chen, Min Chen, and Jing Li—traveled all the way to Texas to, according to local authorities, deftly employ phony identities and credit cards to rack up thousands in unauthorized purchases. Playing a real-life game of cops and robbers, officers nabbed the fraudsters as they were trying swiftly to leave the Macy's parking lot. The suspects have pending charges against them as reported by FOX 4 News.
In a daring daylight sting, the Plano Police Department swooped in last Monday and recovered 40 doctored driver's licenses and a cool $18,340 in cold cash from the alleged scammers' vehicle. A haul of high-end suits and cosmetics initially snatched from the Plano Macy's, valued at $2,992, was seized, along with more fashionable threads and beauty products worth $17,144.87 from previous pilferings in Dallas and Tennessee per NBCDFW.
With the holiday shopping frenzy in full swing, Officer Jennifer Chapman warned shoppers and said, "After Christmas and into New Year's you should really check your balances and credit card statements on all your cards just to see what went through because you only have a certain amount of days to apply for that fraud and get your money back." Macy's, on their end, played Santa in reverse, nullifying a whopping $20,137 in fraudulent transactions charged to their unsuspecting customers' accounts according to FOX 4 News.
Plano Police's sustained sleuthing is not merely a local victory; it echoes far beyond the Texas borders. Officer Chapman articulated the wider importance of their efforts, "It's a pretty big deal because, not only are we helping our community, we are basically helping Washington state and any other communities that these individuals are actually using as their own", per FOX 4 News.
