A person suffered a medical emergency roughly 30 feet up on a water tower near Azle Wednesday evening, prompting a multi-agency technical rescue that ended with the patient being lowered safely to waiting paramedics. Parker County ESD 1 personnel responded to the area of Scenery Hill Drive and West Shangri La Drive at approximately 5:09 p.m., where the individual had become stranded on the elevated structure serving the Shangri La Home Sites subdivision.
According to Parker County Emergency Services District 1, crews initiated a technical rescue response after determining the patient could not be reached by standard ground equipment. Technical rescue teams established a rope rescue system, accessed the patient roughly 30 feet above ground level, and removed them from the structure before lowering them safely to the ground. The patient was then handed off to Parker County Hospital District EMS personnel on scene for further care.
A Coordinated, Multi-Agency Response
The rescue drew resources from several Parker County agencies working in tandem. Responding units included Parker County ESD 1's Battalion 101, Battalion 102, Engine 34, Engine 48, Engine 54, Rescue 34, Rescue 48, and Fire Marshal 101, alongside Weatherford Fire's Engine 1, Squad 1, and Battalion 1. Parker County ESD 8 sent Chief 55, while PCHD EMS unit 71 provided medical support on scene, per the same Facebook post from PCESD1.
The involvement of Weatherford Fire brought additional specialized capability to the scene. The department maintains a regional technical rescue unit and an 8-acre training facility featuring a multi-story burn tower equipped with roof anchors built specifically for high-angle rope rescue operations, according to the City of Weatherford. That kind of equipment and training becomes essential when a patient is stranded well above ground on infrastructure like a water tower, since technical rescue incidents require specialized personnel, equipment, and coordinated operations, the fire district noted.

High-angle technical rope rescues nationwide are governed by strict job performance requirements under National Fire Protection Association standards 1006 and 2500, which define how technician-level rescuers must operate mechanical advantage haul systems, high-angle lowers, and litter tending, per the National Fire Protection Association. Parker County ESD 1 covers 320 square miles of unincorporated county land and four incorporated cities, serving more than 85,000 residents from eight stations and fielding over 7,000 emergency calls a year, according to Parker County Emergency Services District 1. Given that footprint, the district leans heavily on mutual aid and cross-trained technical rescue teams to handle low-frequency, high-difficulty calls like Wednesday's water tower emergency.
Not the District's First High-Angle Call

Elevated rescues have also turned up elsewhere in North Texas; in May 2026, Fort Worth firefighters spent nearly two hours executing a high-angle rope rescue to lower a stranded construction crane operator near John Peter Smith Hospital.
Open questions remain about Wednesday's incident, including the patient's identity and the exact nature of the medical emergency that left them stranded atop the tower. Parker County ESD 1 has not released further details beyond confirming the rescue, logged as Box 5407, was completed successfully on Wednesday.
