A young life was cut short in Fort Worth when a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot during an attempted break-in. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at an apartment near 5200 Southcrest Court.

Officers responded to a call at around 2:30 a.m. reporting that multiple individuals were attempting to enter the apartment. The group had fled by the time police arrived, but they were forced to revisit the scene when the intruders returned and someone inside the home opened fire, according to The Dallas Morning News.

The teenager, identified by a mentor as Devin, was found by police with a gunshot wound to the torso and was pronounced dead at the scene. Devin was reported to be a student at Rosemont Middle School and had been undergoing mentoring to help with disciplinary issues at school, according to NBC DFW.

"I was supposed to go up there today," said Durwyn Lamb, a community advocate and martial arts coach who was actively working with the youth. Before getting a text about the tragedy, Lamb was preparing to mentor the boy, as per NBC DFW.

As investigations continue, the circumstances of the shooting are still being determined. No further details about the identity of the shooter or potential charges have been released at this time.
