After the Christmas cheer fades, Texas Disposal Systems (TDS) is ushering in the New Year with a green initiative to recycle Christmas trees. Starting December 26 and running through January 31, 2024, TDS invites the citizens of Austin, San Antonio, and surrounding areas to drop off their unflocked Christmas trees, as well as other organic holiday decorations like holly and pumpkins, at various collection sites. This free recycling program is a continuation of TDS's commitment to environmental stewardship, a effort they have been championing for over a decade.

According to a report by Fox San Antonio, the collected greenery will be transformed through TDS's composting division into nutrient-rich mulch and compost. These sustainable products will then be available for purchase at Garden-Ville stores throughout Central Texas, supporting local landscapes to thrive. However, to ensure that the composting process is effective, decorations must be stripped of all non-living contaminants, and tree and decorations must be properly cleaned before being dropped off.

There is a catch for those not following the rules; a $55 contamination fee will be assessed for any tree or decorations that have not been properly cleaned of flocking, lights, ornaments, and metal, as per the program's guidelines. Reminding of the state mandate, materials must be tied and secured to vehicles when they are brought for drop-off. Residents looking for additional information on the recycling initiative can find details on the TDS website.

For residents served by TDS Green Waste Service, curbside pick-up for unflocked Christmas trees is also an option available from December 26, 2023, to January 31, 2024. Contact can be made to TDS at 1.800.375.8375 for questions regarding the service in specific areas. Those looking to dispose off artificial trees can arrange for bulky pick-up services by the same number, though additional fees may apply.

In the holiday spirit of giving back, TDS doesn't stop at recycling. For the eighth consecutive year, the company has shown its support by donating wreath composting services for the Wreaths Across America-Austin event, showcasing their dedication to community involvement and environmental conservation. The initiative aims both to honor veterans and contribute to a brighter future, laying the groundwork for sustainable practices that extend far beyond the holiday season.
