A 30-year-old man was rushed to a San Antonio hospital early Saturday after suffering multiple stab wounds to various parts of his body, and he was unable to tell officers what happened to him. Police say three suspects detained at the scene gave conflicting accounts of the incident, leaving investigators to piece together what led to the attack on a quiet residential block just off one of the city's busiest nightlife strips.
San Antonio Police Department officers were dispatched at approximately 2:11 a.m. Saturday to the 300 block of East French Place following a “cutting in progress” call, according to KENS 5. Emergency personnel transported the man to a local hospital, and police said he suffered multiple stab wounds, per WOAI. Two women, ages 38 and 46, and a 50-year-old man were all identified as suspects at the scene, though authorities said the three offered conflicting stories regarding what happened.
The investigation remains ongoing, and it is not yet clear whether the victim or the three detained suspects had spent time at nearby bars before the attack. WOAI's report does not specify what, if any, charges the suspects face, and the outlet notes the man was unable to describe what happened to responding officers.
A Residential Block With a History of Late-Night Violence
The 300 block of East French Place sits in the historic Tobin Hill neighborhood, immediately adjacent to the St. Mary's Strip, an entertainment corridor lined with bars, live music venues, and restaurants, according to Omni Layne Counseling. It is not the first time violence has spilled onto this particular stretch of residential street. In February 2020, San Antonio police responded to a critical shooting in the same block around 2:30 a.m. after an argument that began inside a St. Mary's Street bar escalated outdoors, with the victim shot in the lower abdomen following a fight between two men who had been kicked out of a nearby establishment.
Nearly a decade earlier, in October 2012, police investigated another late-night stabbing on the same block around 2:15 a.m. that left a male victim hospitalized in critical condition, according to MySA. That victim was rushed to San Antonio Military Medical Center. The recurring pattern of violence has not gone unnoticed by neighbors.
Neighbors Warned City Officials About the Block Last Year
In August 2025, residents of East French Place testified before the San Antonio Zoning Commission against a proposed commercial bar expansion at 419 East French Place, citing ongoing late-night fights, public drunkenness, and a previous stabbing on the block, according to Citizen Portal. The zoning request to expand the nearby Brass Monkey bar into a residential house was ultimately postponed following overwhelming community opposition.
The tension between quiet residential streets and the high-density weekend nightlife of the adjacent strip has persisted even as the corridor itself has seen major investment. The St. Mary's Strip underwent a multi-year road and infrastructure overhaul that officially wrapped with a grand reopening in April 2024, accompanied by city safety initiatives on adjacent side streets, as Hoodline reported in its prior coverage of the strip. That project was delayed for years by unmapped utility lines.
What Aggravated Assault Charges Could Look Like
If SAPD detectives determine a deadly weapon was used and pursue charges, Texas law treats assault with a deadly weapon as a second-degree felony under Texas Penal Code Section 22.02, punishable by 2 to 20 years in state prison and a fine of up to $10,000, according to the Texas Constitution and Statutes. Texas courts routinely apply the state's deadly weapon definition, which covers firearms and any object capable of causing death or serious bodily injury in the manner of its use, to knives and other cutting tools, per the Thiessen Law Firm. No charges had been announced against the three detained suspects as of Saturday morning.
A Citywide Drop in Violence, but Local Flashpoints Persist
The East French Place stabbing comes even as San Antonio has posted significant citywide reductions in violent crime. A 2026 study by University of Texas at San Antonio criminologists found that violent street crime in the city fell 21.1% in 2025 compared to 2024, with aggravated assaults dropping 19.8% citywide, following the 2023 launch of the data-driven San Antonio Violent Crime Reduction Plan. San Antonio also recorded an additional 8% drop in homicides during the first half of 2026, bringing the city's murder rate 12% below pre-pandemic levels, according to the San Antonio Report.
Still, blocks like this one near the St. Mary's Strip continue to see late-night violence tied to bar traffic. SAPD's investigation into Saturday's stabbing remains active, and it is unclear whether detectives will be able to reconcile the conflicting statements given by the three suspects at the scene.
