Chaos occurred at an Albuquerque elementary school when David Grisham, a preacher from Amarillo, Texas, appeared dressed as the Grinch and conveyed a controversial message to young students. According to Fox San Antonio, Grisham aimed to "provoke the children to ask the parents the question" about the existence of Santa Claus versus the religious significance of Christmas. Parents and students were forced to confront his unsettling presence on their way to Osuna Elementary School.
Grisham’s actions have sparked outrage among parents. Matthew Harlow expressed his anger to Fox San Antonio, saying, "Trying to take a kid's imagination away, in my mind, is sick. It's twisted." Tensions rose as parents attempted to shield their children from Grisham's signs and presence. Despite their efforts, Grisham has indicated he will not change his stance, stating that the belief in Santa "crowds Jesus out of Christmas."
Grisham is no stranger to this type of behavior, known locally in areas around Amarillo for being a public provocateur. His recent episode unfolded at Sleepy Hollow Elementary School in Texas, where he stood outside as parents dropped off their children. According to the Daily Mail, the retired individual donned a Grinch costume and displayed a sign stating, "Santa is fake. Jesus is real," causing distress among the school community.
School officials, along with outraged parents, intervened to counteract Grisham's impact. The incident led to a clash between preserving the innocence of childhood celebrations and the pressing of a religious agenda in settings meant for education and growth. Despite the commotion, Grisham seems to remain undeterred by the upshot of his actions. Britanny Costello said on Fox San Antonio, "Why can't Christmas be about both?" pointing to an underlying question about the compatibility of secular and religious holiday celebrations.
