Arlington's trailblazers in education, government, and community service get another shot at a prestigious honor—thanks to a deadline extension for the Arlington MLK Awards. Aimed at individuals who have made significant contributions to "The American Dream City," the extension was announced by the Arlington Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee Inc., which has now moved the nomination cutoff to December 22, 2023, according to the City of Arlington, Texas.
The awards, which shine a light on those who embody the spirit and legacy of Dr. King, include three categories: the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Advancing the Dream Award in Education, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Advancing the Dream Award in Government and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Advancing the Dream Award in the Community. Each respective award seeks to honor excellence, leadership, and service in their field—the education award touts "diversity in education," while the government award is all about "accessible government", and the community service award celebrates community engagement, per the City of Arlington, Texas.
The Arlington MLK Celebration Committee, Inc., isn't new to the business of community empowerment. Starting in 1989 and becoming a nonprofit the following year, it's been a solid 35 years of scholarships, community service, and keeping Dr. King's dream alive in Arlington. Key supporters of the committee's mission include Arlington ISD, the Arlington Ministerial Association, Tarrant County College (SE Campus), the City of Arlington, and the University of Texas at Arlington.
