Atlanta's music moguls are plating up more than beats—they're bringing back a community treasure with a side of economic growth. T.I. and Killer Mike, two titans of Atlanta's rap scene, are all set to revive the historic Bankhead Seafood, which shuttered in 2018 after more than 50 years of serving the northwest Atlanta community. Channel 2 Action News reports the duo has been involved with the rejuvenation of this local landmark since its closure, advancing plans to dish out its beloved seafood once again.
Having bought into the restaurant back in 2019—name, trademark, recipes included—the pair worked to rekindle the establishment's former glory. Now, according to a recent WSBTV report, the rappers announced securing a cool $1.2 million loan on December 20, aimed at not just reviving the restaurant but boosting job opportunities in Bankhead, enriching the very streets that have given so much to their own stories.
The financial injection secured through Greenwood—a banking platform specifically serving Black and Latino communities and businesses—marks a pivotal moment for the seafood establishment and the surrounding area. Echoing the collective sentiment. T.I. told FOX 5 Atlanta, “Today’s investment serves as a profound testament to the broader vision we’ve cultivated at Bankhead Seafood." The loan, supported by the Georgia Banking Company, is not merely a monetary boost but seeds for the community's growth and prosperity.
While there's no word yet on when Bankhead Seafood will start shelling out its famed dishes, it's slated to open doors anew in the second quarter of 2024, according to an earlier announcement that was reeled in by WSBTV. "This is a transformational milestone for our business, and the broader Southwest Atlanta community," Killer Mike expressed gratitude in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta. The plan is a potent combo, plating up an assist to the Bankhead district and sticking a fork in community revitalization.
