Austin Gas Prices Inch Up This Holiday Season, Still Below National Average

Austinites are feeling the pinch at the pump this holiday season, as gas prices edge up from last year's figures. The average price for regular unleaded gasoline in Austin reached $2.67 per gallon as of Dec. 20, according to data from AAA, cited by the Austin American Statesman. This is a slight uptick compared to the state's average of $2.65, and last year's Austin average of $2.64. However, prices slightly dipped to $2.66 the following Wednesday, beneath the state average of $2.67.

Despite these increases, Texas motorists are still paying less than the national average, which stands at $3.12 a gallon. The State of Texas has experienced significant upward pressure on gas prices recently, trailing only behind Florida for the sharpest rise. AAA attributes the climb to "robust gas demand and elevated oil prices," sparking fluctuations as the U.S. enters the winter season and drivers take to the roads for holiday journeys, the Austin American Statesman reported.

In alignment with AAA's findings, a report by Gas Buddy found that not only are Austin's gasoline prices higher for the holiday season, but they have also jumped nearly seven cents from a year prior. Gerald Prado, who frequently fills up multiple vehicles due to his involvement in car imports, shared with CBS Austin that fuel costs are simply part of his routine. "I don’t think about it. It’s always expensive,” Prado remarked.

Nick Patek of Liberty Hill, mentioned to CBS Austin, expects prices to subside eventually but acknowledges the current necessity of biting the bullet. "It’s a necessity, you kind of gotta pay for it," Patek said. "I wish it was a little cheaper, but it is what it is, You make do.” Despite localized spikes, Gas Buddy confirms that Austin's rates are still markedly below the national average which is currently $3.07 per gallon.
