The search for a new superintendent to take the helm of Austin Independent School District may soon reach its resolution, as district officials indicate a frontrunner could be named as early as this week. The Austin ISD Board of Trustees held an executive session on December 7 to deliberate over six applications, and it is expected that a vote to select the lone finalist will take place during the Board's meeting on December 14. The announcement has the district poised for a potential shift in leadership, according to FOX 7 Austin
Following the departure of Dr. Stephanie Elizalde in 2022, who accepted a position with the Dallas Independent School District, Austin ISD has been in a state of transitional leadership. Matias Segura had taken charge as the interim superintendent, yet his stint was extended to June 30, 2024, signaling a longer-than-expected search for a permanent successor. The post for the top job was listed from November 17 until 5:00 p.m. on December 7, according to a statement obtained by KXAN.
The educational landscape in Austin has seen a series of swift changes at its apex of governance, with two interim superintendents since Elizalde's exit last year. Dr. Anthony Mays filled the role temporarily before departing for Alief ISD, which brought Segura to the forefront, as per KXAN.
