Soccer fans in Austin have reason to celebrate as the city's Q2 Stadium has been tapped to host international matches for the renowned Copa America in 2024. In an announcement confirmed by officials on Monday, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) selected the venue as one of the 14 lucky stadiums to welcome the historic tournament's action, as reported by CBS Austin.
The competition, which is the oldest national team tournament in the world, will feature a total of 32 matches among 16 teams, including ten from CONMEBOL and six from the Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) and it's set to unfold from June 20 to July 14, 2024 Q2 Stadium is scheduled to host two group stage matches on June 30 and July 2, with the teams yet to be announced, as stated by Austin FC President Andy Loughnane in a press release from the team's official website.
"We're excited to welcome some of the world's best soccer players to Austin for this prestigious event," Loughnane told Austin FC's website. "Q2 Stadium has already proven itself to be a top destination for international soccer, and we look forward to hosting passionate fans from all over the Americas."
This isn't just big news for Austin but also for the United States Men's National Team, which punched its ticket to compete in the tournament following a 3-0 trouncing of Trinidad & Tobago at the very same Q2 Stadium on November 16, with the victory ensuring qualification and setting the stage for Austin to join in on the international festivities come 2024, featuring other football heavyweights such as Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Uruguay, according to details provided by CBS Austin.
