Fans of la bella vita in Austin, get ready to say "buongiorno" to your new favorite corner of Italy in the heart of Texas. Intero, the beloved East Austin Italian gem, is spreading its wings and opening a new venue – Poeta – within the stylish realms of the Frances Modern Inn, bringing its renowned combination of traditional flavors and modern flair to the Central East side.
Starting December 8, according to Eater Austin, Poeta will be dishing out breakfast, brunch, and dinner delights that are as Italian as a Vespa scooter riding through the piazzas of Rome. We're talking the likes of eggs benedict with a twist featuring gnocco fritto, prosciutto, and bearnaise, not to mention the tantalizing Wafflegato, a dessert that’s more art than food with its waffle, maple gelato and espresso. It’s the kind of place that makes you forget, just for a second, that you're not vacationing in the Italian countryside.
But Poeta isn't just another Italian restaurant in Austin's bustling food scene. The brains behind the operation are chefs and co-owners Ian Thurwachter and Krystal Craig, whose culinary prowess vaulted Intero into the spotlight as one of Texas Monthly's best new restaurants in 2018. And while Craig's divine chocolates may not be a mainstay on Poeta’s menu, the possibility of their occasional appearance during special events keeps sweet-toothed patrons on the edge of their seats.
The new establishment takes over the space previously occupied by Uncle Nicky’s, which shut down last December, providing the perfect backdrop for Poeta's vision. With a bar that promises draft cocktails, like spritzes and a nitro espresso martini, and outdoor dining areas for those perfect Austin evenings, it’s the ultimate dine-and-unwind spot. According to Eater Austin, there’s also private dining for those occasions when you need a little more exclusivity to twirl your pasta.
With the city’s taste buds already tantalized by an impressive roster of Italian eateries, Poeta is stepping into a scene well-cultivated for aficionados of the cuisine. As highlighted by Thrillist, Austin is home to a wide spectrum of Italian delights, where the concoctions range from unapologetic old-world indulgence to dishes with a Texas twist. The likes of Juliet's – with its family-friendly atmosphere and a knack for piling high plates of pasta and meatballs — set a precedent for Italian dining that's both delightful and hearty.
