Chaos erupted in Benicia as two suspects rammed a stolen vehicle into police cars in a dramatic escape attempt after committing theft. According to the Benicia Police Department's Facebook page, the incident took place at Solano Square at around noon yesterday, where officers responding to a report of a theft in progress were confronted by the desperate flight of the suspects.
The suspects, attempting to evade capture, not only struck the police unit but also collided with two parked vehicles while backing up and subsequently hit a second police car. Officers were able to halt their fugitive trail and detain both individuals without further incident and it's a miracle that no injuries were reported during the dangerous confrontation. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle used in the getaway had also been stolen from another county, and additional stolen property was recovered from within.
Following the mayhem, the two arrested individuals are now facing serious charges, with details provided by the Benicia Police Department's crime graphics website. Aron Ramon Calderonmartin, 28, and Jaylin Arie Copes, 21, have been booked into Solano County Jail, each saddled with a list of charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit crime, among others.
Calderonmartin and Copes, with calculated evasion turned reckless endangerment, now see their freedom curtailed by the very law they attempted to run from as they await trial, where their futures will be deliberated, a grim reminder that the consequence of crime is often the loss of one's own liberty.
