A former pediatrician from Beverly Grove has been condemned to a new reality behind bars. Gary David Goulin, 62, was sentenced to a stern 7½ years in federal prison after authorities found him in possession of a shocking trove of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), including scores of DVDs filled with explicit images.

United States District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong, presiding over the case, handed down the sentence along with a hefty $50,000 fine and mandated $22,100 in special assessments. Goulin was a trusted pediatrician at the hospital, possessing these materials at the same time, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California.

The former physician's guilty plea to one count of possession of child pornography hardly scratches the surface of his dark hinterland. Back in November 2021, Goulin had four DVDs with explicit materials involving minors under the age of 12. He also admitted to having an additional 57 DVDs with an average run time of over three hours each, filled with more of the sordid content.

In a detailed investigation carried out by the FBI in conjunction with the Los Angeles Police Department, it was revealed that Goulin crossed over the line of decency, using his cellphone in August 2021 to knowingly receive a video of CSAM. Totaled up, the ex-pediatrician had in his stash more than 600 images, some of which displayed children in sadistic or masochistic situations, as detailed by Assistant United States Attorney Sarah S. Lee of the General Crimes.

The Medical Board of California stepped in swiftly, barring Goulin from practicing medicine as of November 2021. His prior charges in Los Angeles Superior Court for possession of child pornography and sexual exploitation of a child were dismissed because the federal charges, brought by a grand jury indictment in October 2022, took precedence.
