San Antonio has been the backdrop for two recent police shootings, each incident captured on body cam footage and now scrutinized by the Bexar County District Attorney's Office. In one incident, a man was fatally shot after allegedly pointing a gun at officers during a foot chase. In the other encounter, an officer was fired upon, returning fire and wounding the suspect, identified as David Trevino, 47.
On November 27, SAPD officers attempted to pull over a vehicle around 1 a.m. near West Commerce Street and Southwest 29th Street. A passenger in the car, later identified as Steven Lopez, 45, exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers gave chase with one officer noticing Lopez turn and point a gun in their direction, prompting both to discharge their weapons. Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene, KENS5 reported.
The second altercation occurred the following day when Trevino, wanted in connection to a previous shooting, was spotted by the department's Covert Response Unit. After he entered a car, a traffic stop was initiated near Interstate 35 and Somerset Road. Dashcam footage shows the moment Trevino exited the vehicle through a window and sprinted into a nearby field, gun in hand. During the pursuit, a shot fired by Trevino struck an officer in the chest body armor, though the officer was unharmed. Multiple officers returned fire, injuring Trevino, KSAT detailed.
The released videos are part of a procedural transparency measure as the investigations continue. The District Attorney's Office will review both cases to determine the necessity of further action. The officers involved in each of the incidents were placed on administrative duty, conforming to department policy. Trevino was hospitalized and now faces charges including aggravated assault against a peace officer while three other occupants of the vehicle were detained at the time of his arrest, as per KENS 5.
