Chaos erupted in Miami's Design District Friday evening when an armed robbery led to shots being fired at a Fort Lauderdale police cruiser. The dramatic incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. outside the upscale Swan Restaurant, drawing a massive law enforcement response and shutting down the bustling neighborhood.
According to Local 10 News, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department's (FLPD) officers were in the middle of a joint investigation with the Miami Police Department when suspects of an attempted armed robbery opened fire, striking the officer's vehicle multiple times. Miraculously, no injuries were reported in the crossfire that left the police cruiser riddled with bullets.
A witness recounted the harrowing ordeal to Local 10, describing how a gunman brandished a weapon behind a man's head in an apparent theft. “He pulled out the gun, cocked it, put it behind his head, and I was just waiting to hear a bang when I figured out that it was a robbery,” said Charley Herz. In a chilling episode of mid-evening violence, assailants managed to snag an expensive watch from the victim before they took off.
One suspect has been detained in connection with the crime, although the hunt continues for any remaining individuals involved. Kiara Delva, a spokeswoman for the Miami Police Department, confirmed that the officers established a perimeter between North Miami Avenue and 36th and 46th Streets, urging drivers to steer clear of the area as the investigation carried on. "When I heard the screaming, I ran over there and it was a woman with her boyfriend or husband saying, ‘They took my stuff,'" Devien Torres, who works nearby, told Local 10 recounting the aftermath of the robbery.
Meanwhile, as noted by WSVN, detectives cordoned off part of the neighborhood for hours and were observed surrounding a Toyota Corolla, believed to be connected to one of the suspects. The Fort Lauderdale Police has yet to release additional details on the joint operation with the Miami Police. Authorities are now scrutinizing surveillance footage as their inquiry into the night's events deepens.
