Broward County's school board is mulling over a move that could have high schoolers hitting the snooze button on Fridays. The district is considering a shift to a four-day school week, a change prompted by the successful implementation of the schedule at Pompano Beach High School. However, it's not without controversy, as various studies outline potential downsides to the program, according to the South Florida SunSentinel.
During a board meeting on December 19, officials discussed the plan, with Pompano Beach High providing an example of the system's success. For over two decades, the school has operated on a four-day schedule, with students engaging in internships and other activities on their day off. Despite a successful run at Pompano Beach, which ranks high at both the state and national levels, other institutions such as Blanche Ely High encountered less stellar outcomes, eventually reverting to five-day weeks after dropping to a C-rating, as per WPTV.
"Whatever they're doing, whatever the magic sauce is, we need to go there and see what that is, because it's working and students want to go to Pompano Beach High School," Broward Board Chairwoman Lori Alhadeff told the SunSentinel. Yet, concerns linger. Studies including a national report from 2018 and research from Oregon State University in 2022 highlighted issues such as an increase in juvenile crime and dip in standardized math scores among students on a shortened week.
With the looming 2026 state law requiring instructional days to start later in the morning, the district faces additional complexities. As schools nationwide consider four-day weeks as a hiring incentive for teachers, Broward County's staff pointed out the intricacies of such a change on transportation, schedules, and collective bargaining agreements. Some areas, like Texas rural districts, have already taken the plunge, while other states enforce bans or restrictions, signaling a mixed bag of outcomes as education systems nationwide grapple with innovative, yet divisive solutions to modern problems.
