A Broward County woman, once an animal rescue worker, was sentenced to three years behind bars yesterday for the severe mistreatment of over 60 cats found in her squalid home. Michelline Toulouse, 39, also faces a ten-year stint of mental health probation following her incarceration, confirmation coming directly from the court proceedings, as reported by CBS Miami.
The heinous discovery in Toulouse's condo in Sunrise occurred in May 2021 when authorities uncovered at least five dozen cats among the living; nine had perished, left in a reeking residence that neighbors claimed emitted noxious odors for months, it was not just the smell though the conditions were also toxic and hazardous with animals exposed to their own waste without proper food or water, according to NBC Miami. Some surviving felines were found wedged within the walls, and others were barely clinging to life.
In addition to her prison term and probation, the former volunteer of Saving Sage Animal Rescue will have to clock in 500 hours of community service with a waste management company and is barred from possessing any animals or contacting the rescue organization where she once worked, says CBS Miami, Toulouse claimed during her trial tearfully that she never abandoned the cats, as opponents emphatically accused. The prosecution laid bare a narrative of neglect, citing cats with visible bones, infected wounds, and victims of maggot infestation.
In the face of the gruesome evidence presented, Toulouse’s family members attested to her well-meaning but misguided actions; they detailed to the court - as per NBC Miami - her troubled upbringing, marked by abuse and a descent into mental health issues, including depression and alcoholism, suggesting that with appropriate support, a path of rehabilitation could be viable for the defendant, and restitution to Saving Sage Animal Rescue remains pending as part of the sentencing conditions.
