Carrollton Fire Rescue (CFR) was hailed as the life-saving heroes of the year, snagging the prestigious Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Provider of the Year award by Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, following a Tuesday triumph at the hospital's Quarterly EMS Luncheon on Thursday, according to the City of Carrollton, Texas.
The heroes in uniform were not chosen at random. Each year, the stakes are high as hospital heavies, including administrators, physicians, and nurses at Texas Health, scour through EMS calls to pinpoint which providers made the most marked impact on those clinging to life. This year, the spotlight shone on CFR for their adept handling of a dire situation in September, where rapid response, a keen eye, and a dose of medical expertise saved a woman's life.
The incident involved a 42-year-old woman suffering severe chest pains who had collapsed at work. With the precision of a finely tuned orchestra, CFR members discerned that the woman was in the throes of a heart attack. They swiftly conveyed the urgency to hospital staff and whisked the patient to the ER team, who escorted her straight to the cardiac catheterization lab. Thanks to the partnership between CFR hands and Texas Health's high-tech haven, the patient's dance with death was halted, permitting her to embrace life once more.
"In emergency situations, our goal is to provide the best patient care to increase chance of survival," intoned Carrollton Fire Chief Michael Thomson. "CFR's rigorous training and award-winning patient care help us achieve that goal, and we are honored to receive the 2023 EMS Provider of the Year award." CFR's dedication to pushing the envelope in applied training and pre-hospital care established a benchmark for life-saving protocol, per the City of Carrollton, Texas.
Responding to emergencies is what CFR does best, and with a service area that includes communities like Carrollton, Addison, Frisco, McKinney, Plano, and Richardson, it's an ever-growing responsibility. Texas Health Plano has come to trust CFR with over 40 percent of its emergency traffic, a testament to the symbiosis between the two. CFR has seen a hefty uptick in patient load, rocketing from around 130 patients a month pre-2020 to now over 200. Such a surge in demand puts pressure on any organization, but for CFR, it's another opportunity to demonstrate resiliency and steadfast commitment to the highest standard of emergency care.
