Chicago convenience stores are on high alert after a series of armed robberies in the Central District rattled local businesses. The Chicago Police Department issued a business alert detailing two recent incidents where a male offender stormed into stores, brandishing a weapon before demanding cash from the registers.
The first robbery took place in the wee hours at a store on the 0-100 block of North Wells Street on December 4, while the second occurred just days later on the 100 block of West Madison Street, according to information obtained from the Chicago Police Department. Both crimes followed a chillingly similar MO, with the thief making off not just with money but also with tobacco products and consumable goods before fleeing the scene.
The suspect has been described as an African American man, aged between 21 and 30, and it was noted that he wore a black puffy jacket, a blue-hooded sweatshirt, black jeans, white gym shoes, and a white durag at the times of the incidents. Authorities are urging businesses to be vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious activity.
In response to the armed robberies, the Chicago Police have advised local stores to quickly adopt stronger security measures. "Ensure your business is equipped with a working video surveillance system and hold-up alarm," the alert emphasized. Shop owners have also been encouraged to actively maintain awareness and to consider alerting other businesses in the vicinity to heighten neighborhood safety.
Community members have been instructed to call 911 if they witness a crime in progress and provide detailed descriptions of any individuals or vehicles involved. This guidance comes as a measure to swiftly apprehend the perpetrator and prevent future robberies from occurring in the area.
