The Chicago Police Department issued a community alert to warn 9th District residents of the potential danger of a series of brazen armed robberies. In two December incidents, victims were confronted by up to three armed individuals, resulting in the theft of personal property.
According to the CPD's community alert, one crime took place in the early hours of December 16, on the 3500 Block of South Honore at approximately 2:38 AM. Days later, on December 23, a similar incident occurred on the 3200 Block South Western Avenue at around 4:02 PM. The offenders, described as African American males wearing dark clothing and black ski masks, displayed handguns during the robberies.
To increase public safety, the police have advised residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to authorities immediately. The CPD has emphasized the importance of remaining calm if confronted and recommending residents to memorize any distinctive features of the assailants, such as scars, or a limp. Additionally, the community has been urged to never chase after fleeing suspects but instead, to preserve any video evidence and contact the police with details.
Residents can take precautions to keep themselves safe, such as not leaving keys in an unattended vehicle and being aware of their surroundings at all times. In the event of a robbery, dialing 9-1-1 and staying on the scene when possible can aid in an expedient response.
