
Residents of Chicago's 009th District (Deering) have been put on high alert after a series of armed robberies took place this December. The Chicago Police Department has reported that these crimes were carried out by one to three males armed with handguns who confronted and robbed their victims. The first incident occurred on the 3500 Block of South Honore on December 16, 2023, at the odd hour of 2:38 AM, and the second took place on the 3200 Block of South Western Avenue on December 23, 2023, at 4:02 PM.
The suspects have been described as African American males, donning dark clothing and black ski masks. The Chicago Police have disseminated an alert, urging the community to stay alert and report any dubious activity. "Always be aware of your surroundings," the police advice, additionally suggesting that the public should "report suspicious activity immediately" and "if you are confronted by an assailant remain calm," according to the community alert issued on December 24th, which can be found here.
With these armed robberies posing a significant threat to the local inhabitants, law enforcement officials have provided several tips on how to reduce the risk of becoming a victim. Key recommendations include not tampering with video surveillance equipment as it might provide vital evidence in catching the culprits and to "never pursue a fleeing assailant, provide the information to the police." Additionally, residents are reminded to not leave their vehicles running unattended.
As investigation efforts intensify, the Bureau of Detectives – Area One has made an appeal to the public for any information related to these incidents. The police underline the importance of cooperation from those who might witness such crimes. "If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information," the alert emphasizes, adding that in such instances, one should "dial 9-1-1 immediately and remain on scene when possible."
