Friday evening's routine call for a disabled vehicle in Oakland took a shocking turn when officers discovered a bullet fragment lodged in the tire. Responding to the eastbound I-80 to I-580 connector at 8:09 p.m., California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers first believed they were simply assisting a driver with a common roadside issue.
The driver, whose evening commute had abruptly halted, managed to drive the compromised vehicle to a local tire shop for repairs. It was there, buried within the rubber and steel, that the evidence of something far more sinister than a simple blowout was found – a bullet fragment. After the startling discovery on December 4, the motorist circled back to the incident, remembering a "loud noise" heard when the mishap occurred, and a snippet of memory involving a suspect's hand and a nondescript vehicle from which the shot may have been fired, according to California Highway Patrol - Oakland.
Details remain scarce as CHP investigates the true nature of the incident, scouring for leads on the shooter and the older model Nissan Altima the driver spotted on that fateful night. As fear taps the spine of Oakland's motorists, any knowledge of this shooting that may illuminate the pressing questions is urged to be shared with authorities. The public is encouraged to call Officer F. Ortiz at the CHP Oakland Area office at (510) 457-2875 with any potentially relevant information.
