As the bowl's historian – a role he’s cherished since 2020 – Fiss is wrapping up his 40th year with the classic matchup that has seen the likes of Ohio State and Missouri grace the AT&T Stadium this December 29. While the fans roar for the players, it's Fiss who gets a round of applause for his decades-long devotion to the game, according to the City of Arlington.
Charlie Fiss, a name synonymous with the Cotton Bowl among sports journalists, first attended the game in 1966 as a young Arkansas Razorback fan. Fast forward to a career that's been anything but a sideline experience, Fiss joined the Southwest Conference in 1984 before his first gig at the Cotton Bowl a year later. It would be an understatement to say he became part of the furnishings. Fiss ruminated, "As a historian, I got to meet all my childhood heroes. People I was reading about or watching on TV as a kid. Whoever would think you would get to do that", per the City of Arlington.
While Fiss' contributions might not be immediately known to the average fan, he's a celebrity in the press box. As vice president of communications from 1993 to 2020, he has been the go-to guy for sports reporters, possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of the game's history. Despite stepping down from the communications throne, he still serves up historical context and assists with media operations during the game week, ensuring that his expertise continues to enrich the Cotton Bowl experience.
Fiss's endeavors haven't gone unnoticed. The maestro of the Cotton Bowl's history has seen his fair share of accolades. These include the Bert McGrane Award in 2017 for distinguished service to the Football Writers Association of America and an induction into the College Sports Communicators Hall of Fame. In recognition of his enduring commitment, Charlie also played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame, safeguarding the stories and achievements of those who've made the classic what it is today.
