A gut-wrenching oversight in Dartmouth, Mass., left a young child, merely 5 years old, shackled to her bus seat for a harrowing five hours. In an incident that has her father, Christopher Matton, seething with rage and demanding accountability, Matton says that his unsuspecting daughter, Riley, boarded the Trembley's Bus Company vehicle at 8:45 a.m. November 30, bound for Kiddie Kampus, yet her arrival never materialized within the hallowed halls of the school because tragedy instead unfolded on the cold, lonely confines of a forgotten school bus. The girl's plight began when she succumbed to sleep during her morning commute, and nobody, it seems, took the care to guide her from her dreams to the day's promised education, as reported by the WCVB.
According to what Matton relayed in an interview with WCVB, once the bus reached its destination, staff at Kiddie Kampus failed to ensure Riley's disembarking, and the driver, amidst the daily routines and responsibilities, did not conduct the necessary sweep of the bus post-route, leading to the distressing situation where the child remained for approximately until almost 2 p.m., trapped, crying out, and eventually found herself in soiled clothing as she awaited rescue in the vehicle, now parked and disregarded in the bus yard in New Bedford.
The concerning incident raised serious questions about the diligence of those charged with caring for our children, wherein a five-year-old's safety is jeopardized, leaving her to scream desperate for attention "for somebody, nobody was there," as Matton poignantly described to CBS Boston. Eventually, it took until the early afternoon before a supervisor discovered her, promptly transporting the cold and terrified child to the warmth of a replacement bus—and at long last—to the daycare center she was never meant to depart from that morning.
Matton's grievance extends beyond the immediate fright of his child, speaking to a deeper concern for the systemic failings that could allow such an event to unfold, he urges caregivers to "Take the next day off, or something, if it's that much of an issue at home in your personal life," highlighting the importance of the duty to afford safety to the innocent lives in their charge, and echoing a sentiment that has many a parent clutching their hearts in empathy and fear, Kiddie Kampus meanwhile has proffered a statement saying, "We are thankful that the child is home safe with their family. We are grateful that there is a full investigation into this issue and will continue to be helpful in any way that we can."
An investigation is indeed afoot, with the police probing the actions—or inactions—of the bus company, the driver, and school officials, though no charges have been filed thus far, Matton called upon law enforcement to unravel this mystery of neglect and in his demand for answers, he insists, "I just want these kids to be able to know they can get on a school bus and go to school or day care and be safe and not have to worry about accidentally taking a nap on the bus on the way to school and waking up to nobody being there" – , as per stated in CBS News, the tremble in his voice a reverberating outcry that echoes in the hearts of every parent who entrusts their beloved offspring to the world, a world we all hope is kinder, more vigilant, than it proved to be on this distressing day in Dartmouth.
