A tragedy struck in the early hours of Wednesday on State Street as flames engulfed a residence, leading to two fatalities and several injuries. According to the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD), a call came in at about 2:24 a.m. prompting an immediate dispatch to 1081 State Street NW over a house fire report. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a two-story home ablaze and quickly engaged in offensive operations to tackle the inferno.
A victim with a minor ankle injury who had escaped through a window alerted the crew to the presence of others trapped inside, causing an escalation in the fire response to a second alarm. This strategic move facilitated the extraction of six individuals from the flaming structure, while three additional occupants had managed to flee before the AFRD's arrival.
Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a report from the Atlanta Police Department's website. One victim was transported by Grady EMS for medical treatment of injuries whose specifics were not immediately made public.
Fire officials have yet to release further details, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
