DeKalb County employees are set to see a little extra cheer in their paychecks this holiday season as CEO Michael Thurmond, along with the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners, has approved a $1,500 retention bonus. More than 6,000 workers will benefit from this seasonal financial boost, with the one-time bonus already starting to roll out in November. Atlanta News First reported on this bonus, which comes after a year marked by increases in wages and salaries.
In a gesture to acknowledge the commitment of the county's workforce, Michael Thurmond said, "Our employees are DeKalb County’s most valuable asset.” He added, “Their dedication, and hard work during some of the toughest times in DeKalb’s history have been invaluable." This initiative is part of a series of financial incentives including a similar $2,000 bonus payment in August 2021, aimed to not only retain but also to fairly compensate the public servants who have shown unwavering resilience in the face of challenging times. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, these bonuses complement a raise in starting salaries for new police and fire recruits and an increase in the minimum wage for all county employees.
The generosity of the county extends beyond just bonuses. In 2023, DeKalb County took decisive steps to improve employee working conditions and to adequately reward service and dedication. Starting salaries for police recruits were increased to $55,000 while fire recruits saw an increase to $51,000. As highlighted in the FOX 5 Atlanta report, the minimum county wage was also significantly hiked from $15 to $17 per hour, reflecting a tangible commitment to the well-being of the county's workforce. An earlier incentive in April 2022 saw public safety employees receiving a one-time $3,000 retention bonus.
These financial incentives are a testament to the value placed on public employees' continuous efforts to serve the community effectively. In a time when many are to quickly forget the personal sacrifices made by these workers, DeKalb County is ensuring to tangibly remember and reward those who uphold the county’s operations, especially through the trials of the past few years. The bonus, alongside wage hikes, positions DeKalb as a competitive employer, geared toward recognizing the unyielding spirit and the integral role of its employees, as reported by Atlanta News First.
