A traffic collision has snuffed out the lives of a young mother and her daughter, leaving a community in mourning and two drivers inching towards criminal charges. According to an official release by the Los Angeles Police Department, the accident unraveled on November 23, when a vehicle, pulling a left from a driveway onto Northbound Western Avenue, was struck by an oncoming firebrand, propelling the second car onto a sidewalk where it met the unsuspecting pedestrians—a 25-year-old mother, Alma Aragon Cruz, and her 8-year-old daughter, Alexa Antonio Aragon.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics rushed to transport the injured pedestrians to a local hospital. Despite their efforts, Cruz's life ebbed away en route, and her daughter’s light was extinguished four days later. The driver of vehicle 1, a male in his 50s, and the driver of vehicle 2, a female in her late 20s, both black, were immediately submerged in the aftermath, with a hospital stay for the former and treatment at the scene. The LAPD's South Traffic Division detectives are now dissecting the circumstances that led to this fateful moment.
Both drivers connected to the incident now find themselves on the precipice of confronting criminal charges, a dire consequence in an already grave scenario.
The LAPD urges anyone with information about the collision to come forward, as detectives strive to paint a full picture of the incident.
