A fuel tanker truck explosion on Florida's Turnpike caused a significant fire and immense traffic disruptions early Friday morning in West Boynton Beach. The blaze, carrying a combustible load of around 8,500 gallons of fuel, erupted after the vehicle crashed near the Hypoluxo Road overpass. The driver of the tanker managed to escape the incident unscathed.
According to WPTV, the collision occurred just before 6 a.m., leading to a traffic standstill and a precautionary closure of the highway which lasted for approximately two hours. Reports specified that the truck contained 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 7,500 gallons of gasoline, which began spilling across the roadway, exacerbating the hazardous situation.
Rescue efforts were immediately set into motion by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue's Special Operations Team, which battled the fierce fire and constructed a dam intended to contain the leaking fuel. "This flame is evil. It is just as mean as they get," aerial reporter Johann Hoffend described during a live broadcast captured by WPTV Chopper 5.
CBS12 reported that 18 units and dozens of firefighters were involved in the fire-fighting operation, utilizing an aggressive attack with foam and water to douse the flames. The response, coordinated with the Florida Highway Patrol, allowed at least one southbound lane near the crash site to reopen around 7:45 a.m., with northbound lanes following shortly after.
The aftermath of the incident continued to affect traffic through the morning, and assessments were expected to be undertaken by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Transportation to determine the extent of the damage. Local residents, some from the nearby Isola Bella community, reported hearing a loud explosion as the events unfolded. Motorists were advised to anticipate delays on the Turnpike throughout the day as cleanup operations commenced.
