A deadly crash unfolded on a busy California freeway yesterday morning, leaving one driver dead and traffic snarled for hours. The incident, which took place on I-680 near Martinez, involved a Ford F-550 and a Ford Escape, each with a lone occupant, as reported by the California Highway Patrol's Contra Costa division.
According to the CHP, the F-550 was stopped in the far-left lane due to suspected mechanical issues when the Ford Escape, unable to avoid the stalled truck, slammed into its rear end at approximately 9:33 a.m. The impact was catastrophic, as the driver of the Escape sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the collision site.
The driver of the F-550 emerged from the accident unscathed, or at least, spared from the brunt of the crash. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of the next of kin. Law enforcement is actively investigating the fatal incident, appealing to the public for witnesses or anyone with information that could shed light on the moments leading up to the tragic event to come forward.
CHP Contra Costa is urging individuals with information to make contact by calling their Martinez headquarters at (925) 646-4980 or emailing details to [email protected].
