An early morning blaze tore through an apartment building in DeKalb County, sending residents into the dark and firefighters into battle against the sprawling inferno. The Villas at Decatur Apartments complex was rocked by a fire that started just after 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, incinerating eight apartments, authorities confirmed.
No injuries were reported in the fire, which seemed to span from one unit before hungrily climbing up to the roofline, causing a partial collapse of the structure. According to Atlanta News First, Assistant Fire Chief Christopher Morrison, with the DeKalb County Fire Department reported, "When it’s in the roofline like that, a lot of the structural integrity gets compromised, so you really don’t have any indication of stability. So, it’s more advantageous for us, to extinguish, it from the outside."
As families grapple with the loss of their homes so close to the holidays, the American Red Cross has stepped in to assist those displaced. The immediate focus is on the investigation, with fire officials of DeKalb County probing into the initial spark that set off this devastating event. The source of the fire is believed to have been in one apartment, but the precise cause remains undetermined.
Crews from DeKalb County were quick to the scene at the apartment complex located on Eastwyck Circle in Decatur, acknowledging the total loss of eight units within the Villas at Decatur. "Thankfully, officials said no one was harmed," reported 11Alive in their coverage, a small consolation in the face of such a destructive incident.
As the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge, with local news outlets pledging to update the story as new information surfaces.
