East Palo Alto police reported a disturbing incident involving minors and firearms just a day before Christmas. In a brief but alarming update released on December 24, the local police chief disclosed the arrest of three 15-year-old boys in possession of a deadly weapon, a 9mm ghost gun. The discovery was made while searching one of the young men's homes, also frequented by even younger children, per the East Palo Alto Police.
The holiday season, typically a time for celebration and joy, was overshadowed in this quiet town by the revelation of youth entangled in criminal activities. "During a search, a 9mm ghost gun was recovered from the young man’s room; a location accessible by the young children residing in the same household," the police statement read. Police expressed relief that the gun was found before any of the children came across it, possibly averting an even graver scenario.
As East Palo Alto's residents come to terms with the dangerous incident, their police chief seized the moment to call for responsibility and care during the festivities. The community update carried a pointed message, urging residents to avoid alcohol-impaired driving and to make wise choices about getting home safely. "We do not want to respond to vehicle crashes due to impaired driving," the chief stated, underscoring the dangers of such behavior.
Emphasizing the importance of looking out for one another, the chief implored the public to intervene if they see someone attempting to drive under the influence of alcohol. The community leader stressed, "If you notice someone who has consumed alcoholic beverages and is preparing to drive, please step in and offer the person another way home."
