Massachusetts residents may need to brace for the season’s first snowy blast, as forecasters are predicting a sprinkle to a few inches of snow starting later tonight and carrying into tomorrow. Temperatures are set to take a slight dive today, with highs hovering around 40, only to barely make it above the freezing mark come tomorrow and Thursday, as reported by NBC Boston.
The coastal regions are specifically in the crosshairs of potential snow accumulation as ocean-effect snow is expected to kick in tonight. Unstable air and cold winds are likely to keep the snow bands active into tomorrow evening. Nevertheless, precise snowfall projections are proving to be difficult, as forecasters are trying to pinpoint exactly where the bands will persist and accrue the most snow coverage.
In a statement obtained by Boston.com, the National Weather Service suggested that "fairly steady snow showers" could lead to 1 to 2 inches of accumulation in some parts, with potential pockets of 3 inches likely in Plymouth County. The anticipation builds as Eastern Massachusetts prepares for what may be a white-ish midweek mood.
Despite the chilly interlude, the region is slated to quiet down on Thursday, and temperatures are expected to round back up for the weekend. However, forecasts show a large, wet, and windy storm may roll through on Sunday, threatening to thoroughly soak up the weekend reprieve. Temperatures could jump high—into the mid-60s for many spots—raising concerns for the next major weather system slated to move in.
