In the community of Edna, a brutal slaying that claimed the life of a 16-year-old high school cheerleader was found dead in her apartment. Officials are treating the case as a capital murder investigation, according to the Edna Police Department.

As reported by FOX 26, the cheerleader, identified as Lizbeth Medina by her family, was unresponsive when police responded to the Cottonwood Apartments. Despite the efforts of emergency medical services, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her absence was first noted when she missed participating in the Christmas parade.

The somber details unfolded as the victim's mother, after waiting to see her daughter in the parade, returned home to the harrowing scene of her daughter's body. "The most horrible way a mother could find her child. She was murdered in cold blood," the grief-stricken mother, Jacquelin Medina, recounted in a statement obtained by KHOU.

"I lost it. She was my world, my everything. ... Everything I do was for her," Jacquelin Medina told KHOU about her daughter. "I just want answers to why they would do this to an amazing little girl who would never hurt anyone and wouldn't dare to hurt anyone," she added.

Authorities, including the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Ranger Division, have joined forces with local police to apprehend whoever is responsible for the crime, as mentioned by Edna police. The Edna High School football team, demonstrating condolence, plans to don purple shirts and ribbons in her honor for their next game in Cypress, according to a statement obtained by KHOU. A vigil is also scheduled for Saturday.
