The El Cajon Police Department is setting up a DUI checkpoint tonight to curb intoxicated driving in an area known for DUI-related incidents. The checkpoint, which will run from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., will be stationed strategically in the 300 block of W. Chase Ave., El Cajon, is aimed at deterring would-be impaired drivers and keeping the streets safe. according to the department's announcement.
Historically, this part of El Cajon has seen its share of DUI crashes and arrests, prompting the placement of the checkpoint. The ultimate goal, police say, is public safety over arrest tallies. Officers on the scene will be checking for signs of alcohol and drug impairment among drivers. They also plan to educate the public on the dangers of driving under the influence, which can often result in hefty fines averaging $13,500, not to mention the possibility of a suspended license.
The local law enforcement authority is also using this moment to remind drivers that being under the influence isn't limited to just alcohol consumption. Prescription and over-the-counter medications can also impair your ability to drive, and marijuana usage behind the wheel remains illegal. They advise using caution when taking any substance that may affect driving abilities and they urge those who may be impaired to arrange for sober transportation or simply stay put.
In a push for increased road safety, the El Cajon Police Department's efforts are supported by grant funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This financial backing ensures DUI checkpoints are conducted regularly, maximizing the potential for reducing drunk driving incidences and promoting responsible driving habits throughout the community.
