Another long-standing Austin institution has poured its last cup as Thunderbird Coffee on Manor Rd. closed its doors for good. The East Austin coffee hub has been serving up its signature brews for the better part of two decades, but Sunday marked the end of an era for the beloved local spot.
Struggling to recover in post-pandemic times, where work-from-home dynamics have transformed local business patronage, Thunderbird Coffee has been grappling with changes too challenging to withstand. CBS Austin reported that despite stretching operations as long as possible to facilitate a smooth transition for staff, the team felt they could not "sustainably operate their business while giving their team the best employment experience possible."
Announcing back in October their eventual shut-down, the shop has since shortened its hours before finally ceasing operations on December 17. A touchstone for the community, Thunderbird Coffee was not just a place for a caffeine fix but also a purveyor of pastries from the well-respected Quack's Bakery and a symbol of the "third-wave" coffee movement—known for its focus on high-quality, artisanal products.
As work patterns shifted, it was not only lifestyles that were affected by the global health crisis; the very fabric of local enterprises like Thunderbird Coffee was left unraveled. Owner and founder Ryan McElroy summed up the struggle: "In essence, we've never really bounced back from the pandemic," he said in an Instagram post noted by Spectrum News. Carving out its niche with beans from Austin roaster Wild Gift, the store had adjusted to the sobering reality that it could not "offer good jobs to people and continue to be here sustainably."
The decision to close has reverberated through the Austin community, a second such loss following the closure of Lucy in Disguise on South Congress. McElroy, acknowledging the emotional weight the closure carries for both customers and employees alike, encouraged regulars to "come say hi, come say goodbye," bidding farewell to the 2200 Manor Road coffee shop that has caffeinated and catered to Austinites since 2006.
