An ex-Marine's dark descent into domestic terror has taken a pivotal turn as Chance Brannon, 24, of San Juan Capistrano, pleaded guilty to an appalling cocktail of crimes, including the 2022 firebombing of a Planned Parenthood in Orange County and plotting several more acts of terror.
Brannon, formerly stationed at Camp Pendleton, laid his violent cards on the table, admitting to planning to further shred the social fabric with attacks on another Planned Parenthood clinic, an electrical substation, and a celebration of LGBTQ pride at Dodger Stadium. These revelations, part of a four-count indictment including conspiracy and malicious destruction of property by fire and explosives, amongst others, forecast a grim reminder of the lengths to which extremist ideology dares to go to forcefully impose its narrative. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Brannon has been in custody since June 2023.
United States Attorney Martin Estrada declared, "The defendant, who was a member of the U.S. military, admitted not only to attacking a Planned Parenthood facility but also to planning for attacks on the power grid and a pride celebration at Dodger Stadium." The depth of Brannon's contempt for segments of society he targeted was laid bare in his plea agreement. "We must never waver in our commitment to protect the American people from violent extremist ideology," Estrada underscored.
Assistant Director in Charge Don Alway of the FBI's LA office minced no words, "Extremist violence fueled by an insular hatred intended to intimidate law abiding Americans will not be tolerated." The FBI is dedicated to defending citizens against such heinous acts of cruelty. It's a fight against hatred that has clearly begun to, ever so malignantly, root itself within our borders. The gravity of Brannon’s intent was evidenced by not just bombastic plans but also his possession of "Total [N-word] Death" emblazoned weaponry and his research on past acts of terror, including a file on the Christchurch massacre and strategies from the Unabomber.
With his day of reckoning slated for April 15, 2024, Brannon stares down a mandatory sentence that could gift him decades behind bars—a sobering outcome for a plot that could have irreparably scarred countless lives. Judge Cormac J. Carney will determine the fate of a man whose service to his country took a treacherous detour into domestic terrorism. While Brannon's accomplices, Tibet Ergul, 22, and Xavier Batten, 21, maintain their not-guilty pleas, the coming trial in March 2024 will further unravel the extent of this conspiracy.
The investigation was a collaboration between the FBI and NCIS, with assistance from the Costa Mesa police and fire departments. "This case represents the impact of close interagency coordination and should serve as a warning that we will seek out and defeat extremist intimidation and hate that threatens access to reproductive health services," stated by Special Agent in Charge Todd Battaglia of the NCIS Marine West Field Office.
