A blaze in Fall River set ablaze a garage and spread to two homes yesterday evening, displacing a dozen residents amidst challenging weather conditions. The fire, driven by wet and windy weather, posed added difficulty for firefighters tasked with battling the inferno.
Officials from the Fall River Fire Department, including Fire Chief Roger St. Martin, swiftly responded to the emergency call, noting the seriousness of the situation. "There were probably six structures within five minutes that would have been involved if the fire didn’t get knocked down when it did," St. Martin explained, according to WHDH. A neighboring bystander, who had courageously entered one of the buildings to ensure all were evacuated, suffered from smoke inhalation and was subsequently transported to a local hospital.
Fall River District Chief Jeffrey Bacon told WPRI that crews received the initial call around 6 p.m. Upon arrival, they faced a garage already engulfed in flames, with the fire rapidly spreading to two attached homes and an additional garage.
Thanks to the rapid intervention of multiple crews, the fire was contained before it could spread further, despite the inclement weather conditions hampering their efforts. In addition to the civilian casualties, a firefighter also sustained minor injuries during the blaze. This event has not only shaken the Fall River community but also the unshakable resolve of those who rush headlong into danger—for the sake of others.
