A devastating gas explosion rocked West Park in Broward County, leaving a family of four injured and several homes destroyed. The incident occurred early on December 19, around 12:30 a.m., when a house on the 5200 block of Southwest 20th Street was leveled by a powerful blast. According to NBC Miami, the explosion resulted in burn injuries, broken bones, and other trauma for the family members, with three being subsequently transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane described the home as "completely devastated," and noted that additional two neighbors were also hospitalized due to the incident. The force of the explosion was so significant that it not only destroyed the target home but also heavily damaged neighboring residences. Surveillance footage captured a ball of fire shooting into the air, and residents described the chaos as akin to a bomb dropping. One witness told NBC Miami, “I smelled like a tire, rubbery smoke. And then that was it. I didn’t see any fire or anything like that but I’m just guessing. It was like on the ground. It was a massive explosion."
While the cause of the explosion remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal, local officials reassure that this seems an isolated incident and there is no broader danger to the community. As recounted to Local 10, Commissioner Joy Smith, a local resident, expressed that the community is in dire need of assistance, reflecting widespread sentiment among the affected. A GoFundMe, set up by one of the families affected, describes their home as "a pile of debris" and calls the road to recovery "daunting".
The Red Cross is working to assist those displaced by the explosion, numbering at least six residents. Additional structural engineers have been called to inspect surrounding homes to ensure their safety and livability. In the wake of the blast, 75 firefighters responded to the scene, although, the fire described by witnesses was extinguished by the force of the explosion itself. Cell phone footage obtained by NBC depicted residents screaming and rushing to help the victims. Aerial footage showed the wide swath of destruction, with debris scattered throughout the neighborhood.
The immediate area was expected to be closed off until December 20 as an ongoing investigation and recovery efforts continue. The community of West Park now grapples with rebuilding in the aftermath of the destructive and sudden blast.
