The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has taken the reins of an officer-involved shooting case following a deadly encounter on Christmas Eve. According to reports from FOX 5 Atlanta, law enforcement from the Chattooga County Sheriff's Office fatally shot a murder suspect, identified as 44-year-old John Wayne Siffles, who allegedly murdered a 50-year-old woman from Summerville.
Officials discovered the body of Sherrie Leigh Little near Johnson Cemetery Road, and evidence pointed to her being killed at her home before her body was disposed of. As investigators pieced the puzzle, they quickly to zero in on Siffles and, by Sunday night, were poised to serve an arrest warrant. According to 11Alive, "Investigators said they suspected he was hiding out at a home on Highland Avenue, just a few blocks away from the crime scene."
Authorities utilized less-lethal methods, including OC Spray and Tasers, in an attempt to apprehend Siffles without resorting to lethal force. However, the situation escalated when Siffles produced a knife and confronted the officers. Faced with what they considered a deadly threat, law enforcement fired their weapons, subsequently wounding Siffles, who was later pronounced dead at Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center.
