The funding, scooped from the city's Airport Improvement Fund, will see the construction of the new academy at Ellington Airport. Set within a span of two acres in southeast Houston, the facility is anticipated to commence construction in May 2024 and aims to complete by May 2025. Determined to quickly takeoff despite the shortage, the state-of-the-art project was greenlit on Dec. 13, with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner noting TSU's pilot program has drawn students nationwide. According to Community Impact, the academy will feature a 24,000-square-foot aircraft hangar, an aircraft apron, office spaces, and a classroom facility to finely tune the skills of the nation's future pilots.
