
Florida's unemployment claims have made an uptick. Fresh numbers from the U.S. Department of Labor reveal that an estimated 5,866 initial jobless claims were registered in the state last week. This is a leap from the revised count of 4,034 claims lodged during the week ending Nov. 25, as reported by CBS News Miami. Throughout the year, Florida has averaged 5,537 claims in the past month and 5,802 weekly since January.
FloridaCommerce recently announced that Miami's unemployment rate in September 2023 stood at a low of 1.5 percent, a decrease of 1.1 percentage points from last year, according to information obtained from FloridaCommerce. This places the Miami region as the metro with the lowest unemployment rate and one celebrating the significant addition of 32,600 new private sector jobs.
On a national scale, 222,000 claims were filed last week, up 1,000 from the previous week's numbers, which positions Florida's increases in a broader context. The Sunshine State is standing out with an impressive 2.8 percent unemployment rate as of October, with an estimated 318,000 individuals looking for work amidst an 11.174 million-strong labor force.
Florida maintains lower unemployment rates than the national average but also robust growth in the private sector and a labor force that has expanded or held steady for over three years.
